Two things here are worth more than the percentage itself. The ACFT exemption removes the tape from the picture entirely, and the accuracy section below puts a number on how far this measurement can be from the truth, which the calculators ranking for this term do not.

The exemption most people miss

A record ACFT of 540 or more, with at least 80 points in each of the six primary events, exempts a soldier from the circumference assessment entirely. That comes from Army Directive 2023-08, and alternate ACFT events don't qualify for it.

Both conditions have to hold together. A 560 total with one event at 70 doesn't exempt you, and neither does 80 in every event adding up to 520.

It's the most actionable fact on this whole search, and it removes the tape from the picture rather than helping you pass it.

The tape test changed in 2023, and it takes two numbers

The Army replaced its multi-site tape test with a single measurement under Army Directive 2023-11. After a twelve-month transition the one-site method became the sole authorised circumference-based method in June 2024.

The protocol is precise. Abdominal circumference at the navel, tape parallel to the floor, taken at the end of a normal relaxed exhalation, three readings averaged and recorded to the nearest half inch, with weight to the nearest pound.

The current equations use only those two measurements, weight and abdominal circumference:

  • Men: %BF = -26.97 - (0.12 x weight in lb) + (1.99 x abdomen in inches)
  • Women: %BF = -9.15 - (0.015 x weight in lb) + (1.27 x abdomen in inches)

So a 180 lb man taping 34 inches comes out at 19.1%, against a 24% standard at age 30.

Height is gone. It was in the retired equations and it is not in these, which is why a tall soldier and a short one at the same weight and waist now get the identical figure.

Weight counts eight times more for men

Look at the weight coefficients: 0.12 for men, 0.015 for women. Adding 20 lb at an unchanged waist moves a man's result by 2.4 points and a woman's by 0.3.

Since weight enters negatively, gaining muscle without gaining waist lowers the reported figure. That is the intended behaviour, and it also means the number can be moved by things that have nothing to do with body fat.

Where these coefficients came from

Worth stating plainly, because the sourcing is not clean. Army Directive 2023-11 and every army.mil host refuse automated requests, so the coefficients here are not read from the directive itself. They come from peer-reviewed work quoting it: a 2025 paper on Army accession and retention standards publishes both equations, and an independent calculator publishes the male equation identically.

An earlier version of this page carried no percentage at all, because five attempts to reach the directive failed and we would not guess at numbers that can decide a career. That was the right call then and the sourcing has since improved.

How accurate is the tape, really

Against DXA, the one-site equation carries a mean absolute error of 4.1 percentage points and limits of agreement of 9.5 points. Its constant error is 0.1 ± 5.2 points, so on average across a group it is close to unbiased.

The average is not the interesting part. The same evaluation found substantial proportional bias, with slope coefficients from -0.08 to -0.48, meaning the equation reads differently depending on where you actually sit: it drifts at both the lean and the heavy ends, which are precisely the ends where a pass or fail is decided.

That is why this page prints a band rather than a single number.

It is worse at detecting change than at describing a state

A study following recruits through eight weeks of basic training compared circumference against DXA and found the tape underestimated body fat by about 6 percentage points in both sexes at the outset.

Tracking the change was worse than that:

Circumference did not detect the change in women at all. Only 56% of women and 83% of men were correctly classified as having gained or lost fat, and 43% of women showed a body fat gain by tape while actually losing fat by DXA.

For a measurement attached to career consequences, that asymmetry is the single most important thing on this page, and no calculator ranking for this term mentions it.

Meanwhile, one ranked calculator is still serving the retired method

Omni Calculator publishes the multi-site equations as current, citing AR 600-9 from July 2019 and AR 40-501 from June 2019, with no mention anywhere on the page of the 2023 change.

Those are real equations and they were the Army standard until 2024. A soldier who lands there today gets a number from a method that no longer exists, presented as though it counts.

This tool still computes that figure in its advanced fields, labelled as retired, for one reason: anyone who finds that number on another site deserves to see what it is and how far it sits from the current method. It has no official standing and the Army will not accept it.

The number of record is still not this one

This reproduces the Army's equation, and it is not the Army's measurement. The figure that goes in your record comes from a trained grader taping you and the Army's own calculator, run through the Army Resilience Directorate.

That distinction matters more here than the arithmetic. Given a half-inch difference in where the tape sits moves a man's result by about a point, and given the error band above, the gap between this and your record is dominated by the measuring rather than the maths.

If you're near the line, the height and weight screen comes first anyway: soldiers within the screening table never get taped at all.
