Numbers written the Roman way
Roman numerals are a number system from ancient Rome that builds values out of seven letters instead of digits. Type 2024 and it becomes MMXXIV; type MMXXIV and it comes back as 2,024.
The system is additive at heart. You lay symbols down from largest to smallest and add them up, so MMXXIV reads as 1,000 plus 1,000 plus 10 plus 10 plus 4. Two features keep it from getting unwieldy: a subtraction rule that avoids long repeats, and, for very large numbers, a bar that multiplies a letter by a thousand. There is no symbol for zero, and no way to write a negative or a fraction.
The seven symbols
Every Roman numeral is spelled from just seven letters, each worth a fixed amount. Learn these and the rest is arrangement.

I, X, C, and M can repeat, up to three times in a row, so 30 is XXX and 300 is CCC. The other three, V, L, and D, never repeat, because two of them would just make the next symbol up: VV would be X, so you write X.
Subtraction, so nothing repeats four times
Put a smaller symbol before a larger one and you subtract it. That single rule is why 4 is IV and not IIII, and why 9 is IX. It scales cleanly: 40 is XL, 90 is XC, 400 is CD, and 900 is CM. Only I, X, and C ever subtract, and each only from the next two larger symbols, which is why 99 is XCIX and never the tempting IC. Written out, 1994 is MCMXCIV: M for 1,000, CM for 900, XC for 90, and IV for 4.
Past 3,999, a bar does the heavy lifting
With plain letters the largest number you can spell is 3,999, or MMMCMXCIX, since no letter may appear a fourth time. To climb higher, a bar drawn over a numeral multiplies it by 1,000. A barred V is 5,000, and a barred M is a million, which pushes the ceiling to 3,999,999. Why a typo gets caught
Most converters will take IIII, or VV, or IC, and cheerfully return a number.
