A day of the week calculator returns the weekday a given date falls on, computed straight from the date itself, with no calendar to count off. Enter any date and the answer comes back with its ISO week number, its position in the year, and whether that year is a leap year. 1 January 2000 was a Saturday, and it was day 1 of week 52 of the previous ISO year, which is the sort of thing week numbering does to New Year dates.

Most tools in this space will not tell you how they reach the answer. Of the nine competitor pages checked for this build, four disclose no method at all, and one claims complete accuracy while naming no algorithm.

What is Zeller's congruence?

Zeller's congruence is a formula that returns a weekday directly from a date, without stepping through a calendar. It counts January and February as months 13 and 14 of the previous year, and that single trick is what makes the leap day fall out of the arithmetic with no special case bolted on. Math is Fun, one of the few pages that names its method, gives the valid range as 1582 to 4902.

We implement the congruence rather than lean on the browser's own date object, then check the two against each other across a century of dates in the test suite. Getting the same answer two independent ways is worth more than trusting either alone.

Why old dates come with a warning

The Gregorian calendar took effect in October 1582, and countries adopted it across the following three and a half centuries, so a weekday computed for an old date may not be the one people alive at the time wrote down. In the countries that switched at once, Spain, Portugal, France, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Italy and the Catholic Low Countries, Thursday 4 October 1582 was followed directly by Friday 15 October 1582. Ten days simply vanished.

So a date in September 1752 may never have existed in British records, and a date in the 1600s falls on one weekday in Madrid and another in London. This tool flags those dates. Every competitor checked will return a confident weekday for 5 September 1752 without a word about it, and the closest any comes is a note that pre-1582 dates "might not align historically".

The extras: week number, day of the year, leap years

The ISO 8601 week number counts weeks starting on Monday, with week 1 being the week holding the first Thursday of January. ISO also numbers the weekdays 1 to 7 from Monday, which numbers Sunday as 7, a difference that quietly breaks spreadsheet formulas written against the other convention.

Day of the year is the plain ordinal: 31 December is day 365, or 366 in a leap year, and 1 March is day 60 in a common year but day 61 in a leap one. On leap years themselves, the rule is that a year divides by 4, unless it is a century year, which must also divide by 400. That's why 2000 was a leap year and 1900 was not, a distinction that broke a good deal of software written in the 1990s.

What this calculator does not do

Zodiac signs, birthstones and birth flowers are bundled into several competing calculators. Astrology is not a calculation, and printing it as a computed output would mean asserting something the tool cannot know, so those are left out.

Julian to Gregorian conversion sits outside too. Flagging that a date precedes a country's adoption is honest; converting between the two calendars needs the country as an input and is properly a historian's job.
