That single fact is why time sums go wrong on a normal calculator: type 2.45 plus 4.50 and you get 6.95, a number that means nothing in clock terms. Subtraction runs the same logic backwards, borrowing 60 minutes from an hour whenever the minutes you are taking away are larger. Take 20 minutes from 1 hour 10 minutes and you borrow, leaving 50 minutes. Reverse those two and the answer is the same 50 minutes with a minus sign, which the tool shows plainly and never quietly flips the order on you.

How do I calculate the hours between two times?

The span between two clock times is the end time minus the start time, borrowing an hour as 60 minutes when the start minutes are the larger ones. A 09:00 start and a 17:30 finish is 8 hours 30 minutes. Payroll wants that as 8.5, which the tool prints alongside.

Multiplying and dividing a length of time

Scaling a duration is the mode people forget exists. Multiply 1 hour 30 minutes by 3 and you get 4 hours 30 minutes, which is the honest way to price three units of a job or plan three batches of a bake. Divide 4 hours 30 minutes by 3 and you are back to 1 hour 30 minutes each.

Dividing by zero returns nothing useful, so the tool says so rather than printing an infinity.

What this calculator does not do

Time zones and daylight saving sit outside it. A clock-time subtraction assumes every day is 24 hours, which quietly breaks on the two nights a year when a region shifts its clocks and the day runs 23 or 25 hours. Converting between zones is a different job again.
